Whether you and he have discussed marriage or you just have a hunch that he may pop the question in the near future, you've probably given some thought to a diamond ring. If you and your intended shop for your diamond ring together, become familiar with the elements of diamond quality before you get to the mall. Invented by the Gemological Institute of America, the diamond grading system is commonly known as the "4 Cs" - carat, clarity, color and cut.

Carat

Carat weight measures a diamond's size. Each carat is equal to 100 points. Thus, a .75-carat diamond is the same as a 75-point stone or a 3/4-carat diamond. According to the Diamond Information Center, the larger a diamond, the more rare it is. Not only are larger diamonds found infrequently in nature, but they also show off the stone's color and cut to the best advantage.

Clarity

According to the Diamond Information Center, the purer a diamond, the more brilliant it is. A diamond's clarity is judged by the number, color, type, size and position of inclusions - "nature's birthmarks" - it contains. The fewer inclusions the stone has - as determined by a grading system - the more valuable it is.

Color

The purer the color of a diamond, the more rare it is. Truly colorless diamonds are the most valuable, while those with subtle yellow or brown tones - as determined by a grading system - are less so. Comparing stones side by side is the best way to see the color of each stone.

Cut

The Diamond Information Center maintains that, while nature is responsible for the other three Cs, it is the cut of a stone that releases its sparkle and beauty. When a diamond is cut to good proportions, light will reflect from one mirror-like facet to another and disperse through the top of the stone, resulting in a display of its brilliance.

There are several different shapes of cut diamonds; the one you choose depends upon your personal taste. Marquis cuts are out of style, but Princess, Round, Oval, and Emerald diamond rings are chosen by many couples.

While diamond rings have traditionally been comprised of a single diamond or solitaire, the current trend is a ring with a center stone and side diamonds. As for settings, there are over half-dozen categories to choose from. The prong setting is still the first choice for most buyers, but that the bezel setting is also popular. And, while yellow gold may make a comeback in the future, the hot metal for diamond rings is still platinum. While it's pricier, it's also heavier, hypoallergenic, and will never taish.

When we think of precious gems, we usually spare little thought to the hard work that it takes to bring them to us in the beautiful jewelry that we love to wear, but diamond mining is, in fact, an expensive and dangerous procedure, reflected to the consumer in the price that must be paid to own one. Wouldnt it be wonderful if there were some way to recreate that same brilliance and beauty in a less dangerous, and hence less expensive way? Todays technological innovations mean that this does not have to be a pipe dream any longer with lab created diamonds, we can wear beautiful gemstones produced by the intelligence of mankind, rather than the trials and tribulations of nature, and without the expense that mining brings. Lab created diamonds are now very good and becoming as popular as the real thing.

The popularity of diamonds have urged experts to try to find more cost effective ways of providing the brilliance of the stone in our jewelry, and over the years there have been many alteatives to diamonds put forward, including cut glass, rhinestones and cubic zirconium. While these have proved satisfactory for some purposes, these lab created diamonds have consistently lacked the brilliance and beauty of a genuine diamond. This was until the discovery of moissanite in meteor fragments, and the realisation that moissanite could be reproduced in controlled circumstances, leading to the dawn of lab made diamonds.

It was discovered in 1995 that moissanite could be reproduced under laboratory conditions, and the unique beauty of the stone made scientists realize that there would be a huge market for these lab created diamonds. While the difficulty involved in growing these lab made diamonds remains quite high, the price for moissanite jewelry is higher than you might expect in a diamond substitute, but today, many gemmologists consider the moissanite stone to be a gem in and of its own right. Unlike previous substitutes, moissanite is in many ways superior to diamonds, with more sparkle and brightness that the mined gem.

Previously, choosing a gem that looked like a diamond but wasnt one was seen as a step down, a compromise, but with the quality of todays lab created diamonds, this is no longer the case. So take advantage of todays great moissanite prices while they last, because someday soon, the brilliant sparkle of this stone will make lab made diamonds even more sought after than the real thing.

Lab created diamonds, and Moissanite in particular, are now as good as the real thing.

Anne Klein began her company in 1968. Originally Anne Klein only sold clothes in matching pieces and bits to make it easier to put outfits together. She was able to offer women products that fit their needs and well before anyone was serving this market. It could be called an oveight success -in the least a smashing success as the result of Klein's hard work, confidence, and brilliance. Anne saw herself rise to the top and was one of the world's top designers when she died, unexpectedly, in 1974. The company has succeeded in her absence with labels such as Donna Karan, an assistant on Ann's.

Of course clothing pieces was not enough when women wanted accessories, along with handbags, purses, hats and gloves came the Anne Klein watch line. Today there are actually two lines: Anne Klein and Anne Klein II. These watches come in hundreds of models and are almost all priced below $200. There are a few exceptions that include diamond faces and can be found in stores such as Bloomingdales, Macy's, and Nordstrom.

The range of price is exceeded by Anne Klein's range of styles. Fittingly, there are Anne Klein watches to match any outfit and any style or trend. The one thing that seems to emanate from all Anne Klein watches; however; is an unassuming elegance. The are never pretentious and even the advanced and detailed models somehow maintain the pure simplicity captured by only the world's finest designers.

I think that one of my favorite crafts is jewelry making. Beads should be part of any well-equipped jewelry making kit. I love the choice of styles that jewelry making allows you to try. The range of materials that you can use for jewelry making also means that their possible uses are limited only by my imagination. Even though I was not a particularly experienced craftsperson I soon found that I enjoyed jewelry making and created wonderfully original jewelry. Of course, I now wish that I was capable of far more intricate jewelry making but at least I am always improving on the ones I made before!

I enjoy jewelry making using a variety of different materials. It is fun to look at what I have handy that I can convert into pretty jewelry. One of my favorites is using strips of colored paper for paper mache jewelry. My kids love tearing pictures out of glossy magazines and we try jewelry making together, well, almost! They prefer to move straight to the decorating stage and I have found that dried macaroni makes an ideal bead. The tubes of pasta have a ready made hole for threading and can be painted easily. We also use clay quite a lot when jewelry making, probably because kids enjoy molding the shapes. I have to take over the baking part but once
that is done they can decorate and vaish their creations and continue with their jewelry making.

Of course jewelry making is made more fun if you can give the jewelry to other people to wear. I like creating necklaces and earrings to give as gifts. People often appreciate handmade goods more than shop-bought ones, but more importantly I save a fortune with my crafty offerings! My kids like making friendship bracelets for their mates and have recently got into using lettered jewelry to make up people's names on necklaces. A lot of kids wear them round here and also have become interested in jewelry making too!

I use a lot of different materials as a base for my jewelry making. It would probably be impossible for me to remember all of them but I like using leather cord and jewelry metal the most. I have tried almost anything that I could thread a bead onto probably! Nowadays I do not have the time to dedicate to jewelry making that I once did, in fact I probably haven't made anything for over a year due to our latest addition but when she is older I may well teach her the basics too.

Creating Your Own Jewelry

By Elijah Anderson

Do you have a better way to accessorize yourself than with a nice piece of jewelry? The problem is that sometimes costume jewelry can also be extremely expensive. Nevertheless, you have another alteative to buying them you can make them. It is easy to lea how to create your own jewelry. And sometimes it is even better than buying them because you can make them to match your outfits and your personality. This way you are not only going to save money, you are also going to have fun.

Are you interested in making necklaces? The simplest way to do this is using beads. You will see that you can create a variety of beautiful necklaces just using some heavy string and a various beads of different colors. In the case you are going to cover the whole circumference with beads you may even substitute the heavy string by a dental floss. You should always bear in mind what are you going to wear the necklace with. This way you can compliment the color of the necklace with the color of the dress you are wearing. Once you know the colors, you should start thinking about the patte, which can be achieved by alteating colors or shapes, or making all of the beads the same size and color.

The most important thing at the moment of making your necklace is to be creative. But you should not forget to keep the theme in mind when you start making it. When you go to buy beads you can buy the ones you always use plus some focal point beads that are bigger that the rest. These bigger beads can be use when you choose to employ wire instead of string for your necklace, just one or two beads for the whole piece are enough and the wire show through. Usually you can choose from a great variety of attractive beads, such as wooden, ceramic and glass pieces.

If you are thinking of making beads, you have a lot to do. You only need beads and wire to make a great variety of rings. What you have to do is to twist various strands of wire together making a circle that fits your finger. You have to remember to maintain the ends long in order to string beads on the edges. Just make a ball of wire to maintain the final bead on each strand in its place and then keep the beaded strands as individuals strands or twist them into a ball. And use it with whatever you want!

Another option is to make earrings. It is not difficult because the majority of craft stores sell earring components that can be used right away; the only thing you have to do is add the decorations that you choose. You can buy almost twenty pairs of earrings for no more than three dollars. You can also include some ribbons or a strand of beads. Just be creative and you will be able to attend any party.

Similar techniques can be used to create bracelets and anklets. You have just to twist together bare wire and beaded wire to make a nice combination or create attractive wire shapes with just a pair of needle-nosed pliers. You only need to include a nice object that fits and make some loops in the wire and create your own charm bracelet.

It does not matter whether you are a teenager or an adult, you can have a lot of fun making jewelry. It is also a great activity for whole families and a creative way to entertain girls at a birthday party. It is a nice way to create the pieces of jewelry that go with the things you wear. What is more important in creating your own jewelry is that it is a real expression of your creative side.

Over the centuries clocks have been used as a status symbol by those who wear them. Their precision, elegance and convenience are just some of the attributes that clocks and watches represent. Often they are bought purely for their aesthetic looks. and at other times they are bought because of their technical attributes like being precise to the last second or even millisecond. This is what makes clocks and watches so collectible and in some cases they can command high sums of money.

Whether you collect the new high precision watches or ones that come from a past era, the fact is that over the years this hobby has become a high tuover business. And collecting watches is in a lot of circles regarded as a wise form of investing.

At the start of the last century the clocks that were available for men or women were firstly pocket clocks, and then clocks that held by a pendant attached to the lining of jackets or corsets. The advent of war, industrialization, and the development of the sport activities, brought over new trends which extended to not only the way we dressed, but also how we carried our clocks.

It is said that it was a nanny who invented wrist watches at around the end of the 19th century, who fixed a clock around her wrist by using a silk band. The first watches to be made were in fact smaller models of pocket clocks that were fitted with a leather strap. Once this product hit the market newer designs started to be produced based around this same concept.

It was Louis Cartier who first made the kind of watches we see today when he created a watch for a flying pioneer hero by the name Santos Dumont. By 1911 this same type of watch was on general sale. That same type of watch became the blueprint of what wrist watches look like to this day.

Soon after the design of wrist "clocks" began to diversify away from the classical round shape that had been in vogue up until that time. From the Cartier classical wrist watch other makes of watch started to emerge which were characterized by their shape. Movado is the perfect example of these new designs when it came out with the "Polyplan" shaped watch. Then came the famously and cryptically called "clock reference n. 1593" by Patek Philippe which was a rectangular shaped watch.

From 1913 onwards more and more watches started to be developed in all shapes and styles. From the "gondola" watch of Patek Phillipe to Louis Cartiers' "Tank"; named thus because it was inspired by the shape of English armored cars of the time. These are watches which are very much sought after. There were other numerous watch makers like Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin who along with Patek Philippe and Cartier came out with many other designs which added other features to the watches like lunar phases, month and day most of which are found in mode watches now.

Of course we could not mention wrist watches without mentioning the most famous of them all: the Rolex watch. In the 1920s Rolex debuted in the world of wrist watches with the elegant Rolex Prince and its revolutionary "dual time" feature made famous for having the "seconds sector" larger than that of the minutes. At the same time Jaeger Le Coultre produced an even more advanced piece called the "Reverse", also very revolutionary in that it could be tu 180 degrees within its case, thus protecting the crystal and dial. It became incredibly popular and was only prevented from achieving even greater success by the recession of the 1930s and the advent of world war 2.

These early watches of the 1910s to 1930s are what define all the makes of watches that we see and wear today. This short article has only scratched the surface of what is a very vast subject which has many more watch makers with diverse and revolutionary designs. However it is makers like Rolex, Cartier, Jaeger Le Coultre and the others mentioned that are amongst the most valuable and collectible, and should you ever be so lucky to get one then make sure you hang on to it - preferably to your wrist.

Are you new to shopping for diamonds and precious gemstones online? Are you confused by all the lingo?

Do you know exactly what to consider when buying diamonds and gemstones online?

Youre not alone. Buying anything on the inteet can be an intimidating experience if you dont have all the details. And with something as valuable as precious gemstones, the conce is magnified.

Some of your conces might be the quality of the diamond or gemstone you are buying. How can you be sure you arent getting ripped off? Can you trust the seller? What if the shipment gets lost?

How do you determine the right type of diamond for your special gift? What if you dont like it when it arrives? And what, exactly, do you have to consider when buying the particular diamond?

There are specific steps to take when searching online diamond stores. First, determine how trustworthy is the company. Youll also want to know things like their retu policy, their guarantee, their privacy policy, the security of their order processing, and what support you can expect to receive.

There are several ways to check this information. The most obvious is to look around their site for links to this information, which should be easy to locate. Check the About Us page and youll find a good deal of information on the company and their mission statement. If this page doesnt include all the information, look for the Privacy Policy link and security statements which are usually clearly stated.

Check their guarantee of satisfaction. They should offer a minimum of 30 days retu if you arent satisfied, but you might also want to find out if you will be required to pay a restocking fee. Its best if this is not charged.

Click away from any site that doesnt provide this vital information.

Find out how your diamonds and precious gemstones will be shipped. Youll want to be sure there is some tracking in place to guarantee your shipment arrives safely. If it doesnt, youll want to know theres proof whether or not you actually received it. Youll want your shipment sent through insured carriers, like FedEx and UPS. Youll also want to be sure it is insured for the full value of the package contents.

Look for information on the support they offer to back up their products. Specifically, see if there is a telephone number you can call to talk directly to an expert about your choice, and to answer any questions you might have about buying diamonds and precious gemstones. Any reputable firm should be ready and able to provide this one-on-one support to all their customers.

The experts can help you with many aspects of your purchase, such as determining the best settings for your diamond, determining value versus quality of the stones, and an explanation of the 4Cs that determine the quality and value of a diamond.

A good online jewelry store will have an easy-to-understand educational section that provides descriptive images and explanations on diamonds and their value.

Just quickly, you should know that the 4Cs are the carat, cut, color and clarity of a diamond.

Carat is a diamonds size measured in carat weight. Sometimes carat to measure diamonds is confused with karat, with a k, which is the measure of the purity of gold. Clearly, these are two separate entities. Each diamond carat is 100 points. A carat would be a 50-point diamond, for example.

Cut refers to the craftsmanship the stone cutter applied when cutting the facets of the diamond. The aim is to cut it to make the best use of light. In other words, they want the light to reflect back through the top, rather than out the sides or directly through the bottom of the diamond. A diamond of large carat weight that is poorly cut is not as valuable as a smaller diamond that is well cut and therefore offers the greatest brilliance.

Color is the natural color that nature bestowed on the diamond during its development. Generally, the closer the diamond is to colorless, the more valuable and beautiful it is. The color scale goes from D to Z, and represents a gradual increase in color from champagne to light yellow. The highest range for a colorless diamond is D, E, and F. Its rare to find such colorless diamonds, so the closer you can come to this range, the better the diamond.

Fancy colored diamonds, on the other hand, are extremely rare and very expensive. Some of the best fancy diamonds are in well-defined colors of pink, canary yellow, blue and green. These are major showpieces usually only affordable and accessible to the very rich.

Clarity determines the purity of the diamond. During its development, a diamond acquires tiny traces of natural elements that become trapped inside it. These are called inclusions and are unique to every stone, providing an excellent method of identifying individual diamonds. The harder it is for a jeweler to spot these inclusions using a 10X magnifier, the better the diamond.

Certification provides you with all the details of your diamond based on the 4Cs. There are several gemology labs that examine and certify diamonds. Make sure your diamonds are certified by reputable labs, as there are some that are not. The most prominent labs are the Inteational Gemological Institute (IGI), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL) and GemEx Systems.

Conflict Diamonds is one expression youre likely to come across in your search for diamonds.

Conflict diamonds, also referred to as blood diamonds, originate from areas controlled by forces that are opposed to legitimate govements. In those regions, constant wars cause numerous deaths and maiming injuries. Money acquired through the sale of their rough diamonds is used to fund military action in opposition to those govements.

In 2003, President George W. Bush signed the Clean Diamond Trade Act that requires all U.S. diamond retailers to purchase only from sources that can prove through documentation that the diamonds were received through legal channels.

Today, reputable diamond stores will ensure that their products are not conflict diamonds. For this reason, its important for you to verify the legitimacy of the online diamond retailer.

One final way to ensure you're working with a reputable diamond seller is to examine that particular retailers history. Alexa offers an excellent free service.

Go to http://www.alexa.com and type in the URL of the site youre querying and you will be able to see where the site is listed on the inteet. You can also download the free Alexa toolbar that attaches to your browser. When you surf the inteet and find a site youre interested in, just click the Alexa toolbar icon and it will immediately give you details on the site owner and other information.

Beware of any site that does not provide owner name and contact information, either on their site or through the Alexa listing. Youll also want to make sure the email is not a free one. These can be identified by such extensions as .gmail, .yahoo, and others. Instead, you want to see an extension as their URL, such as mine: sdickens@diamondhaven.com.

As you can see, the extension matches my URL: http://www.diamondhaven.com which offers more helpful information as well as diamonds to buy. It includes a library of interesting topics surrounding diamonds, from their development and history to famous diamonds and diamond fashions.

In conclusion, the best advice is to stay alert when shopping online. Check the sites history, lea about the owners, and when youre conducting your buying transactions, make sure you see that gold secure lock on your Inteet Explorer browser, or whatever symbol your browser uses to let you know you are on a site that has secure socket layer to protect your information.

When we think beads, we normally think of bracelets, anklets, hair oaments and necklaces. What about beaded earrings? Well, earrings are mostly made of metal, enamel and precious stones, some of us think. Earrings are fancy and expensive!

Fortunately, earrings don't have to be fancy, or expensive, or made of just one extravagant material -- or a combination thereof. A person can be elegant without spending a lot of money, and a person can be elegant without looking so metallic!

American Indians used to create very elaborate beaded jewelry for different purposes. Among them were dream catchers -- ritual items placed on cradles and other sleeping areas in order to drive away bad dreams -- and beaded earrings for the women. A common stone involved in the making of bead jewelry is turquoise, which is said to lend strength of conviction and character to the wearer.

Some beads are made of semi-precious stones, and as such make beaded earrings that are comparable to earrings made from other kinds of exotic materials -- like hemp. Beads come in virtually every hue of the color spectrum, so it is no problem to find or make beaded earrings to catch one's fancy.

To achieve the natural, native look, go for beaded earrings. They are certainly unique and attention-catching. Choose from a variety of multicolored or monochromatic designs, mix and match according to your clothing, and existing jewelry. If you already have bead necklaces or bracelets -- or even beaded shirts! -- why not wear beaded earrings to match?

Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Marie Osmond and "Law and Order" actress Elisabeth Rohm have all purchased and sported beaded jewelry at one time or another, and it has worked very well for them indeed!

Beaded earrings are easily very colorful and elegant, with a touch of that old world charm. If you want a change from the traditional metal-and-stone ensembles in most jewelry outfits, beaded accessories are the way to go.

If you are still young enough to admit you have birthdays and your birthday falls in April then you already know the diamond is April's birthstones. Celebrities who already have a love affair with diamonds are even more apt to be seen wearing diamonds if their birthday is in April. There are many April celebrities that share the diamond birthstone with you.
But did you know that the diamond is also deep in mystical powers from ancient times? It is said to enhance ones competence, trust and love relationships.

Diamonds also have a long history in their medicinal qualities. During ancient times diamonds were believed to heal illness. Diamonds were first placed into the bed to warm the diamond to enhance their healing qualities.

It is even said that over the centuries Cupid's arrows were tipped in diamonds and thus it eaed its reputation as the perfect gift of love.
The white and brilliant hues diamonds signify life, joy and innocence. But really diamonds come in a wide range of colors other than white which includes shades of gray, brown, yellow, blue, red, and green.
Pre 1400's diamonds were only available to those of royal blood who were the only people able to wear the symbol of courage and invincibility. During the mid 1400s The Archduke Maximillian gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy beginning the long tradition of diamond engagement rings which is still carried on today.

The practice of wearing a diamond engagement ring on the third finger often referred to as the ring finger began in Egyptian times because it was believed the vein of love ran through this finger directly to the heart.
Besides being the birthstone for April there is no gift that is more symbolic of love than a diamond and no more convincing promise of eteal and everlasting love.

Ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that had fallen from the sky making a visit to earth. Others revered to diamonds as Gods Tears or dew drops. The origin of the first diamond has never been solved and remains a mystery to geologists and sciences even today.
Initially geologists thought that India was the first river-bed source for mining diamonds. The ancient Hindus called the diamond Vajra which means lightening. It eaed this name because of its incredible strength and the light rays it emitted. Besides being the most beautiful gem they are also the hardest substance found on earth. Diamonds have been mined Botswana, Australia, Russia and South Africa, and recently Canada has been added to that list.

April does have an alteative birthstone which is the opal. Unlike diamonds which are simply crystallized carbon, opals are found deep within the earth where the intense heat develops this beautiful stone.
So even though there are many April celebrities that share the diamond birthstone with you the diamond is a celebrity and star all on its own. Recognized back to ancient times for its symbol of love and its beautiful brilliance.

As you walk along on your quest for the perfect diamond for your mate, you hear, "Pssst! Hey mister, I hear you're looking for some good rocks. I've got some great stones, really reasonably priced. I'll even throw in the ring for free!"

Sounds shady? You bet he is! Of course, you wouldn't really buy a diamond from a guy in an alley wearing a trench, right?

Bet you'd be amazed by how many scams are pulled and in broad daylight by jewelers who seem absolutely honest. Some of them even have beautiful shops that look really hi-tech. Beat them at their own game by leaing their scams.

The bigger the better, a lot of people say. When a jeweler tells you that you have a five carat diamond ring, don't get dazzled by the carats. If there was only one stone then you'd have no problem. You might actually be getting a 1 carat diamond surrounded by eight half-carat smaller pieces.

An honest jeweler will tell you the weight of each stone in the ring separate from the center diamond. In fact he'll even give you a certificate from a reputed lab such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as proof. If he can't or won't do these, you're better off buying from someone else.

Then there's the bait and switch. The jewelry store will advertise a diamond at a great price. Problem is that when you get there, they'll tell you that it's already been sold and try to convince you to get another piece instead. Rarely is this case true. Usually there was never such a piece and they'll show you something more expensive that they will try to get you to buy instead.

If the diamond that they announced for sale isn't available, ask for another just like it. If they can't produce another one of the same special quality and price, you are better off walking out the door. Don't let them get your hard eaed money.

Normally when you go to a jewelry shop, the gems are lying on a beautiful cloth bed under bright lights. The gems are so white and tempting. Hold it right there! Most diamonds really will look whiter especially under lights that give off a certain blue component. If you really want to check the color of a stone, check it in sunlight. If they refuse, refuse to purchase as well.

You were finally able to find the gem that symbolizes your love. You ask your jeweler t o know make it into a ring so that you can propose to your beloved. He said that you would have to leave it with him for a few weeks and he'll call you when it's ready.

When the ring arrives, it is beautiful but.something about it just doesn't feel right. You can't quite put your finger on it but this doesn't seem to be the diamond that you bought. How can you tell?

The solution is simple: have the diamond checked by an independent gemologist certified by a group such as the GIA. Have them compare it to the certificate of your diamond to confirm that it is a match. After all, no two diamonds are exactly the same. Then you'll know and can demand proper action.

Bottom line, to avoid scams you should take the time to educate yourself about the basics of diamonds. Next you'll need to find a jeweler or gemologist that you can truly trust. Lastly, always ensure that you are given the proper certificate for your gem, one issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or another reputed independent lab. These will save you a whole lot of money and avoid giving you headaches.

The mysterious and the mystical have always had the power to hold human beings in thrall throughout the millennia. Celtic jewelry is no exception to this, since they are an extension and a reminder of the traditions and rituals of the Celts, an ancient European people. Today, men and women of all ages wear Celtic jewelry not only for their beauty, but also for their symbolism and metaphysical connotations.

Also popularly -- though inaccurately -- known as Claddagh jewelry, Celtic designs are appreciated for their intricacy and beauty. Numerous pattes of Celtic origin, such as the spiral and the cross, are used by jewelers in their creations. The Celtic spiral symbolizes eteity and is used abundantly in many Celtic jewelry items today. Just as popular is the Celtic cross, which pre-dates the Christian cross by about two centuries. The Celtic cross is thought to bring greater knowledge, understanding and the fortitude to deal with trials and adversities, as compared to the Christian cross, which is believed to protect the wearer from harm.

Claddagh rings and bracelets are two more examples of popular Celtic jewelry items that are replete with symbolism. Rings that have the Celtic knot design symbolize eteal and undying love; this is why they are exchanged by the bride and groom in present day wedding ceremonies – to signify their fidelity and never-ending commitment to each other. Such rings and bracelets are also given to friends as an indication of loyalty.

Necklaces and pendants are likewise integral parts of a Celtic jewelry collection. Depending on the wearer's preferences, the pendant may depict the image of Celtic figures such as the ever-popular knot, spiral, Celtic cross, serpent or dragon. Such symbols have deep spiritual and religious meaning, and it is one of the main reasons why Celtic jewelry items are popular dress accessories today.

A person does not have to be Irish or Scottish or to have any other Celtic connection in order to appreciate Celtic jewelry. Whether given as gifts or maintained as personal keepsakes, these unique pieces can be enjoyed just for their beauty alone. But a little awareness of their meaning, as well as their place in history and tradition add to their air of enigma and allure.

Antique Engagement Ring Facts

By Elijah Anderson

Selecting an antique engagement ring may be the most thrilling jewelry purchase a couple will ever make together. Purchasing an antique engagement ring can add special meaning and be an even greater investment than standard market fare. The differences between contemporary and antique jewelry can include a host of elements.

The antique diamond was hand cut and may be cut in styles that are no longer in common usage. The old mine cut and the cushion cut were popular more than a century ago and were designed to catch candle light in a dazzling way that new diamond cuts do not. These diamond cuts may make a candlelight dinner more romantic than would a new diamond cut which only shows off in harsh electric lights. Rose, Abraham Asscher and emerald cut diamonds are also found in antique engagement rings.

Although any ring produced before 1950 can be considered to be an antique, there are five main time periods commonly represented in the antique engagement ring market. The Georgian period (1760-1837), the Victorian period (1835-1900), the Art Nouveau period (1890-1919), the Art Deco period (1920-1935) and the Art Retro period (1930-1950) are all available in the antique jewelry market. Each of these time periods is characterized by its own unique design elements.

As with any antique only an appraiser can authenticate the age of antique engagement rings and the buyer should beware of contemporary merchandise which may have been misrepresented and only has vintage styling. While still valuable in terms of metals and gemstones these vintage styled pieces may not have the same values as the antique engagement ring.

How to Properly Clean and Maintain Your Jewelry

All that glitter, all that gold. When you first purchase your gold ring, your diamond necklace, your platinum bracelet, it shines. But after that first exhilarating period of newness, how do you keep it looking new, even as it grows old? After all, a 14 karat gold piece of jewelry isn't as easy to replace once it wears out as, say, a vacuum cleaner bag. Because it is so expensive, and because it is so beautiful and sometimes delicate, you must take careful care of your jewelry so that it can remain worth the price you paid for it long after the fact. But how do you take care of your jewelry? I have a few tips.

One of the simplest rules is that perfumes and jewelry, although they may seem to fall into roughly the same category, do not go together. Nor do hairspray and jewelry. They're all beautifying, but if you use perfume or hairspray while wearing your jewelry, you risk coating it with a film of stickiness, and pearls and organic gems like it can be damaged by the alcohol contained in these sprays. Another simple rule is to avoid swimming in pearls. The chlorine eats away at the pearl and the jewelry will fade.

Chlorine, of course, should never come within range of gold jewelry. It pits the gold and disintegrates the solder joints of a ring.

What about diamonds? Take those rings off before you shampoo your hair, clean the floor, lotion your hands. Diamonds are very attracted to grease. In fact, in diamond mines, beds of grease are used on conveyor belts to keep loose diamonds from being mixed in with the dirt. All that grease contained in makeup, body creams, sunscreen, and so on all adhere to the grease. Also remove your diamond jewelry before getting especially activediamonds are susceptible to impact damage, and might crack or chip.

It's important to keep your diamonds clean. Now, you can do this yourself often, but you should also have it done professionally around once a year at the least. If you're doing it yourself, remember to start with some mild soap, a soft toothbrush, and warm water. Or, instead of using soap, you could make your own with one part ammonia and six parts water. Rinse the jewelry in Ethyl Alcohol or tap waterand only those. There are some beliefs out there that it's a good idea to use toothpaste or rubbing alcohol. Well, it isn't. Toothpaste scratches gold, and the oil in rubbing alcohol tus diamond jewelry spotted and makes it fade.

When the time comes to get your jewelry cleaned professionally, visit your jeweler. They check for wear in the prongs see if the gem has any damage or needs polishing. It's necessary to restring pearls now and then to protect against breakage and loss, so the professional jewelry cleaners can do that too.

Jewelry stores tend to have ultrasonic cleaners, which send high frequency sound waves through detergent, which removes grime and dirt from hard to reach places. Safe for most diamonds, ultrasonic cleaners can be hard on softer jewels like sapphires and rubies. But be careful of the ultrasonic cleaners, which can also be purchased for the home, if you have small side stones or loose stones, because the ultrasonic cleaners could shake them loose from their mountings.

If you keep your jewelry clean, whether by following the clean-by-hand, clean-by-professional method or by purchasing your own professional cleaning equipment, it will last longer than if simply left uncared for against your skin. With you taking careful care of them, your jewels will stay as beautiful as though they were new.

Don't leave your beloved jewelry sitting in a drawer just because it's too dirty or because you forgot to take it off before going in the hot tub or pool. Sterling silver may tu all black or gold color when it's in contact with the chemicals presents in the water contained in such facilities. Products like bleach & nail polish remover will also have a terrible effect on your sterling silver jewelry. But it's not over for those pieces since you can clean that off pretty easily.

Many cleaning techniques & products are available on the market today so don't rush to your nearest jewelry store. They will clean your jewelry efficiently & it may be the right solution if you don't mind paying or really don't want to deal with it.

Many cleaning solutions are sold in regular store, you just put the jewelry in the little container filled with a special cleaning solution, close it up & shake it a bit. It will work pretty well & wont be ruining the material or stones but it may also remove the antique look you used to have. Many jewelers add a darkening solution onto the jewelry which gives it an antique look by tuing the incursions black & it shows all the details of the piece a lot better.

Cleaning cloths are a good alteative, just rub the jewelry & it will tu nice & clean again. It may take more time but it does give great results. Only problem is you may not be able to rub in certain areas depending on how the piece. If your jewelry is just a little dirty this technique is the best, it will refresh the clean look of it and you will be surprised at how well it works. Many different type of cleaning cloths are available, the biggest seller on the market is the Sunshine Polishing Cloth. Such cloths are impregnated with special chemical cleansing compounds that do wonders.

I have been asked about using the new ultrasonic cleaners available at many stores, so I have purchased one myself to try. First, I must say do not ever put any jewelry with gemstones or precious stones in such an apparel. It will ruin it. Also many of those apparel have an automatic shut down timer. Personally, it did not work on the pieces I tried it on. It did have a small effect, but I had to keep on reactivating it to the point where it became a nonsense. So I would not recommend wasting your money, it may be ok for cleaning other things but not jewelry.

The technique I prefer may not be suitable if you have just a few personal pieces of jewelry. Tumblers are such great jewelry cleaners it's unbeatable.

If you want to do it yourself, remember to remove Turquoise & Howlite gemstones and cameos before putting the jewelry in the tumblers. There are two types of tumblers; rotary & vibratory both need stainless steel shots in the barrel to work. Shots are available at specialized jewelry supply stores for about twenty dollar a pound. The rotary tumblers with a capacity of 3 pounds need about 1 pound of shots while the regular vibratory tumblers need about 3-4.

Both apparel work very well just add the stainless steel shots, a little water, a bit of regular dishwashing detergent & your jewelry in the barrel & start the machine. Regular cleanings with the rotary tumbler will take about 24 hours while the vibratory will take only a couple of hours. Another inconvenient of the rotary tumbler is that you will have to load & close the barrel each time while the vibratory is an open barrel so you can just throw & pick up your jewelry freely. Also, the vibratory tumbler can hold a larger volume of jewelry at once. Still, rotary tumblers are interesting because they are much cheaper & make a lot less noise.

You want to avoid cleaning your jewelry as much as possible? Good idea, you can do so by being careful avoiding direct contact with ammonia, bleach, nail polish remover, alcohol, and other harsh cleaning products. Best is to always remove all your jewelry before cleaning, going to pools or hot tubs, painting, moving heavy fuiture, doing sports so that you don't brake it or get it dirty. Also, when you are not wearing your jewelry store it in a ziploc type of bag, the reason for that is that sterling silver oxidizes in contact with oxygen which tus it black over time.

So, youre ready to pop the question? Getting engaged is a once in a life time occasion and you want everything to be perfect. The right atmosphere, romantic setting and of course the perfect ring are essential. The ring has to be special enough to sweep her off the feet, the same way you did while courting her. Nothing will impress her more than buying her a magnificent, dazzling diamond solitaire ring.

Engagement rings account for almost thirty percent of diamond jewelry sales. Out of these, the most popular is the classic solitaire ring. A solitaire diamond ring is a ring having a single diamond rather than a cluster of diamonds or side stones. Solitaire rings showcase the diamonds beauty. The band of a solitaire ring is generally made of platinum, a shining white metal that compliments the stone perfectly. The setting, which holds the stone securely, comes in a four prong and six-prong variety. The setting with four prongs shows off the diamond, while the six prong hold it more securely.

Solitaire diamond rings come in all sizes and shapes. From the regular round rock to the solid square, and rectangles, solitaire diamond rings can look as unique as your fiance. It is sometimes better to purchase your diamond separately from the band and setting. This small step will ensure your purchasing good quality solitaire for your engagement ring.

Buying a diamond solitaire ring for your girlfriend is an expensive affair. If you are planning to surprise her, make sure the rock is something which she will cherish. Casually, ask her preference in jewelry, and talk to her friends. While purchasing your ring from the jeweler, ask him to provide a purity certificate and remember to discuss the exchange policy of the showroom. A classic solitaire diamond ring will definitely light up her face and your life.

Diamonds Jewel in the Crowns

By Elijah Anderson

The Diamond remains, not only a romantic gem of great beauty, but a legitimate trading item on commodity markets and is an established trade in the world's toughest financial markets of London and Europe. As a commercial commodity diamonds are very popular because of their controlled value inteationally, mainly by De Beers, who held the monopoly for a long time.

Aesthetically, it is because of its purity that it captures immediate attention. There is no other known substance as hard in the mineral world, yet once the stone is cut and faceted it possesses a brilliance which seems to hold the potential for the reflection of all the colors of the rainbow. It is understandably symbolic of human fidelity and truthfulness and of enduring virtues and is expected to demonstrate a commitment to these values at the time when couples become engaged to be married. This custom is so well established, that it is difficult to concede that any other stone will oust it from its supreme status. It is anticipated that marriages will last to endure as the diamond - and this is re-enforced by the marketing slogan "diamonds are forever".

In fact this purest of all substances of the earth has been formed by the processes of nature's laboratory deep in the earth, sometimes to 150 km, which allow the blackest of all substances, pure carbon, to be transmuted into the clear 8 faced crystal which confronts us in seeing a diamond, which is later transformed and made exquisitely lovely through skilled expert faceting, into a brilliant.

Diamonds are cut with the aid of diamond dust. Diamonds possess luminous properties after exposure to sunlight and glow in a darkened room, to fluoresce in ultraviolet light and also after friction.

Melting diamonds and other stones in alchemical processes is known in the ancient Ayurvedic science. This process is considered to produce a cardiac tonic and when added to other medicines enhances therapy, with the best of the elixirs curing many serious diseases.

In France in the fifteenth century, Louis IX decreed that no-one who was not of royal blood could wear diamonds. At that time they were engraved but not known to be cut and polished until 1496.

Diamonds occur either colourless and clear or tinted. The most prized quality has a slight blue tint. The tinted "champagne diamonds" have been well marketed and have proven popular in recent years. Diamonds with yellow color are generally quite de-valued. Diamonds with small flaws also sell quite cheaply. Rarely found are blue diamonds, green and even pink diamonds, with the latter marketed by Argyle with great success. There is also a very rare red diamond. The unusual colored ones are generally considered to have more commercial value but those who believe in the traditional value place greater importance upon the pure, clarity of the colourless jewel.

Diamonds are found in many places of the world, Boeo, Brazil, South Africa, Siberia, China, Canada, India and in recent centuries, Weste Australia.

There are some interesting stories about some of the famous gems... One of the largest is that which belonged to the Rajah of Matan and weighed 318 carats. The Pitt Diamond weighed 410 carats in the rough but was reduced to only 137 carats when cut. In 1720 it became part of the French crown jewels and was later pawned by Napoleon to the Batavian govement to finally be incorporated into the crown of Napoleon III.

Excelsior was discovered in 1893 and was 969 carats but only 364 carats after cutting.

The largest diamond ever found was the Cullinan in 1905 in the Transvaal, South Africa. It weighed 3,106 carats. In 1908 it was cut into 9 large and 96 lesser stones. Two of the largest are in the British Crown Jewels.

The Koh-in-oor, or Mountain of Light, is claimed to be the oldest large diamond and dates back to 59 BC. The founder of the Mogul Empire, Baber, reported it to have come into the treasury at Delhi from the conquest of Malwa in 1304, after passing through many Indian rulers' hands. It was thought that the safety of the dynasty depended upon the possession of this fateful jewel. After a time it came to Runjeet Singh, King of Lahore who wore it on his arm between two smaller diamonds. He bequeathed it to the Shrine of Juggeaut but it was later presented to Queen Victoria by Lord Dalhousie on the annexation of the Punjab and sent to London in 1850. The Indians believed the stone would bring misfortune until restored to the line of Vira-maditya. It was re-cut in England which decreased its size. Its present location is unknown.

Napoleon wore the famous Regent diamond in the hilt of his sword. The Regent stone was originally found by a slave who concealed it by hiding it in the folds of the bandage he was wearing over a wound. It was stolen from him and he was thrown into the sea. The diamond was sold to a dealer named Jamchund for 1000. Then it was purchased by Thomas Pitt, grandfather of the Earl of Chatham who purchased it for 20,400. By 1717 it was sold to the Regent of France for 135,000. 410 carats in its natural state - after cutting, which took 2 years to complete, it was reduced to 137 carats and was perfectly white without spot or flaw. During the French Revolution the diamond was stolen form the public treasury. Twelve years later it was recovered and set in the imperial diadem of France.

Another which has stirred the imagination of many is the blue Hope Diamond, with its reputation of bringing back luck - a reputation which is claimed to be unfounded. It is 45.52 carats in size and thought to be now in the U.S.. This famous Hope Diamond was originally owned by Taveier, the French traveler bo in Paris in 1605. In 1668 after time in the East, he sold it to Louis XIV. The Duchess de Montespan, the royal mistress, prevailed upon the King to be allowed to wear the dazzling gem at a Court Ball. From that time it attracted disaster. It was later wo by the unfortunate Marie Antoinette and also lent it to the Princess de Lamballe. But both suffered execution by the guillotine. Some believe that it was the blue diamond which brought them bad luck. It disappeared for 30 years but was later found in possession of a lapidary of Amsterdam, whose son stole it but then committed suicide. It passed to a Frenchman named Beaulieu who took it to London and sold it to a dealer Daniel Eliason and then died mysteriously the following day. Mr. Henry Thomas Hope was the next purchaser, paying Eliason 18,000 for it. The stone remained in the Hope family until 1901 when Sir Francis Hope sold it to a diamond merchant, who resold it to an American, who sold to M. Jacques Colot who sold it to a Russian Prince who was stabbed to death. The French dealer from whom he purchased it ended his own life. A Greek merchant met with a violent death after selling the diamond to Abdul Humid, the ex-Sultan of Turkey, who narrowly escaped with his life after losing his throne. A New York jewellers next bought the gem. It was believed to have been lost with the ill fated Titanic but later seems to have been established as being owned by Mr. McLean, an American millionaire. One wonders - what has happened since?

Most attempts to create artificial diamonds were unsuccessful until General Electric in 1954 was able to produce the conditions which resembled those found 350 km deep in the earth. They produced diamond crystals which are now being exported all over the world. Industrial quality diamonds produced naturally are considered of less value than these synthetic diamonds in meeting manufacturer's needs. In 1962 synthetic Diamonds of up to 1 carat were produced in Japan by the Toshiba Electric Company by a simpler process but they were of industrial not gem quality. Industrial diamond drills are used in various industries and in cutting through concrete and masonry. Diamond blades are now in demand for use in micro-surgery.

Creation of artificial diamonds require enormous pressures and high temperatures and to this point in time have only been moderately successful in Russia, Ireland and South Africa making industrial quality stones, not gemstones. But who would not prefer to have the opportunity to appreciate and to benefit by the sterling qualities of a beautiful natural jewel?

Platinum has become a popular choice for jewelry due to its strength, durability, and marketing efforts of the platinum industry in recent years. Platinum is three times more expensive than gold. Jewelers aggressively market it because they make three times the profit on every platinum item they sell compared to gold. Platinum is a naturally white, lustrous metal that is long lasting. Sometimes the claims of strength and scratch resistance are overstated. Like all precious metals, platinum will scratch. A platinum scratch is different from white gold because it simply plows the metal instead of removing it.

Traditionally, jewelry manufacturers used platinum alloyed with metals from the platinum group metals (iridium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and ruthenium). With the proper mix of these platinum group alloys, platinum becomes one of the hardest metals making it a strong and durable jewelry metal. Platinum will not rust or corrode and the platinum family metals make it hypoallergenic and ideal for persons with sensitive skin.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines for platinum jewelry state that only items consisting of 950 part per thousand of pure platinum can be marked stamped PLATINUM or PLAT without more alloy information. From 750-950 Platinum, the platinum group metals must also be indicated. For example, PLAT900IRID for 10% Iridium alloy. Historically, the most common alloys in America were 95% Platinum with 5% Ruthenium or 5% Cobalt and 90% Platinum with 10% Iridium.

There is a misperception that the 950 platinum is better than the 900 platinum. However, pure platinum is very soft and the right alloy mix is what is important. Different alloys and different percentages produce better results for different jewelry purposes. Some alloy mixes work better for casting and some are better for handcrafting like bending the prongs over fragile diamond coers. Many artisans feel that PLAT900IRID is the best general-purpose alloy for diamond rings.

While platinum is best known for its use in jewelry, more than 60% of platinum is used for other industrial purposes such as catalytic converters in autos and pacemakers in the medical field. Because of its rarity and the rapidly increasing demand for this versatile metal, the price has soared in recent years.

The high price of platinum has caused some jewelry manufacturers to start using lower percentages of platinum and to use other alloy metals to lower the cost of the jewelry. Unfortunately, these new alloy mixes are reducing the very qualities that made platinum desirable. The new alloys produce more brittle platinum that is more susceptible to damage.

For example, metal that is stamped 585 Platinum is really only 58.5% pure platinum and 41.5% copper and cobalt with the result that it is more likely to crack, crater, discolor or irritate sensitive skin. Less scrupulous jewelry vendors remove the 585 stamp and complicate the situation, leading consumers to believe the metal is the traditional high quality platinum.

Historically the jewelry shopper did not have to be conceed about the purity of platinum because the alloy metals were in the platinum group the quality was uniform regardless of the particular alloy or percentage used.

Todays jewelry shopper is at potential risk because the lower quality platinum looks the same as the higher quality platinum. While platinum looks similar regardless of the alloy, the weight of lower quality alloy mixes is lower because there is so much less of the dense platinum.

Currently there are no FTC guidelines for the new platinum alloys so it is up to the jeweler or appraiser to help the consumer determine if the platinum is well suited for its intended use. The consumer deserves a waing if sold lower quality platinum since it might not hold stones as well and is more susceptible to damage. However, do not expect the jeweler selling low quality platinum to point out this potential problem. As with any important purchases, it is up to the consumer to be knowledgeable and ask the right questions before making a purchase.

Choosing Your Diamond Shape

By Elijah Anderson

Choosing the shape of your diamond jewelry is one of the key elements in determining the overall appearance of your ring or other diamond jewelry. There are many shapes and variations from which to choose, but first off do not confuse "shape" with "cut". A diamond's shape is just that: the outward appearance of the stone, whether it is round, oval etc.; while the cut refers to how the diamond itself is fashioned, how many facets and so on. Below I'll examine the various diamond shapes and tell a little about each of them, in order to help you make that all-important choice.

Round Brilliant Diamonds - By far the most popular, accounting for more than 75% of diamonds purchased today, they are also the most expensive. Most coveted as an engagement ring, they also find their way into earrings and pendants. Round Brilliant Diamonds are noted for their fire and brilliance.

Oval Diamonds - A perfectly symmetrical design yields a large surface area that gives the impression of a much larger diamond, oval diamonds are favored by women with smaller hands or shorter fingers, it's shape giving an elongated look to the hand.

Princess Cut Diamonds - Though in appearance the smallest of diamonds, a Princess Cut Diamond is basically an inverted pyramid which puts most of the carat weight near the bottom. Princess cut diamonds are most often sought as solitaires, and are a relatively recent shape.

Marquise Diamonds - Another diamond shape that looks larger than it actually is, the Marquise diamond is elongated with points on each end, though sometimes altered to a "French tip" where the end point is excised. A great choice for a solitaire.

Emerald Cut - Rectangular with coer cuts, this diamond is also called a step cut, because of the shape that resembles stair steps. Large, open facets on this diamond make it imperative to choose a stone of greater clarity and higher color, as inclusions and weak color are more noticeable in this cut.

Pear Shape Diamond - Exactly as it says, this diamond is pear-shaped, or sometimes reminding one of a teardrop. Most often found on pendants and earrings.

Heart Shaped Diamonds - A brilliant cut, the heart shaped diamond is a romantic choice that varies from jeweler to jeweler as it's shape can be greatly influenced by the skill of whimsy of the gem cutter, as well as variable facet configurations. Seek out a perfectly symmetrical stone.

Trillion Cut Diamonds - A newcomer, bo in the late seventies, this diamond is a triangle stone with equal sides. These can make stunning earrings.

Baguette Cut Diamonds - Another step cut diamond shape that is most frequently employed as side stones. Because it has few facets, quality and color come into play more here as imperfections become more visible in these uncomplicated, though elegant diamonds.

Radiant Diamonds - A square or rectangularly shaped diamond, the Radiant resembles the emerald shape but has 70 facets, making it much more brilliant and dazzling than the Emerald shape.

Asscher Cut Diamonds - A rectangular shaped diamond with high crown step facets, this shape was patented in 1902 and is know for it's fire and ability to retu light.

Cushion Cut Diamonds - Sometimes referred to as "pillow cut", this shape was popular in the 1800's. Cut with candle light in mind, (nothing else available at the time!) the cushion cut is a rectangular/squarish shape, with more than a touch of old world elegance about it.

Kite, Trapezoid & Half-Moon diamonds - Lesser know shapes used mainly for side stones.

Choosing the right diamond shape can be more easily accomplished with a little information and the help of a professional jeweler. Here's hoping you find that perfect diamond!

The demand for moissanite, a manmade gemstone that resembles diamond, is sweeping the nation. According to manufacturers Charles & Colvard, North American sales have skyrocketed to a 113 percent increase in the first-quarter of 2005. Moissanite is sold at several department store chains and appeals to people who want to buy inexpensive alteatives to diamond jewelry.

Kings Jewelry, one of the largest jewelry chains in the U.S., has marketed moissanite as a gemstone rather than as a diamond substitute, and this message has been successfully received by self-purchasing women. These consumers do not want to buy diamonds for themselves, but do want to wear diamond-like gemstones that have a higher quality than cubic zirconia.

Although moissanite is a beautiful and affordable gemstone, its diamond-like qualities might confuse you and your jeweler into thinking that the gemstone is actually a diamond. Scams have occurred throughout the United States, including in OFallon, MO where a man purchased moissanite stones from con artists, thinking they were diamonds. The buyer later brought the moissanite to a local jeweler who even mistakenly deemed the stones to be diamonds.

After carefully observing the dual trends of moissanite sales and diamond fraud, St. Louis-based Neustaedters Fine Jewelry offers tips about both jewels to dispel their common myths.

What is Moissanite?

Originally discovered by Dr. Henri Moissan at Meteor Crater in Arizona during the late 19th century, moissanite is a mineral composed of silicon carbide. A century after its discovery, laboratories began producing crystals from moissanite, and in 1998 Charles & Colvard began selling the gemstone.

Moissanite & Diamonds have Very Different Origins

Although the original moissanite fragments studied by Dr. Moissan originated from a meteorite that struck earth, moissanite gemstones are manufactured in labs. Since moissanite is difficult to grow, the gemstone is much more expensive than diamond substitutes like cubic zirconia.

In contrast, diamonds are created by natural processes. According to South African Diamonds, a Web site devoted to diamonds originating from South Africa, the jewels were formed millions of years ago in the earths mantle when carbon crystallized due to high temperature and pressure. When volcanoes erupted, magma carried diamonds just below or on the earths surface. Later the magma cooled and tued into rock which trapped diamonds for thousands of centuries. This rock is what people mine in places such as South Africa.

Their Similar Appearances have Some Distinguishing Traits

A glistening moissanite gemstone often looks like a diamond at first glance, but magnified moissanite has several characteristics that a qualified jeweler can identify.

Your jeweler should examine a suspected moissanite stone under a 10-power loupe to get a good look at the stone and its characteristics. Magnified moissanite stones often feature subtle greenish tints whereas quality diamonds are often colorless. Under 10-power magnification, moissanites facets seem to multiply, which is called double refraction, but diamonds only reflect their facets once. Moissanite also bears white ribbon-looking imperfections which are not present in diamonds. In order for you to observe everything first-hand, Neustaedters has a very large screen in its shop to magnify your gemstone.

Recent technological developments have improved testing methods for moissanite. Some jewelers use special moissanite testers to detect the gemstones. When the testers probe tip touches moissanite, you can see the Moissanite light flashing and hear a beeping noise. But since this test is not 100 percent accurate, your jeweler must use his or her knowledge and a trained eye to perform other tests.

A less hi-tech approach that some jewelers use is a flotation test, performed in a dense liquid. If performed properly, moissanite will float whereas a diamond will sink. It is recommended, though, that your jeweler uses multiple tests to determine the true identity of your stone.

What Should You do When Purchasing Moissanite or Diamonds?

You should only purchase the jewels when you are issued a guarantee that states the authenticity of your diamond or moissanite. Neustaedters recommends that you go to a jewelry store certified by the American Gem Society (AGS) because they will possess the knowledge and tools necessary to identify moissanite and diamonds.

Moissanite and diamonds both have their own advantages, but you and your jeweler must to understand the differences and characteristics of each stone to make a wise purchase.

Ladies did you know that the pearl is considered to be the "Queen of Gems"? It symbolizes innocence and purity and makes a fantastic, cherished wedding gift. Pearl necklaces are adored by many and at any time, whether it's wo at a formal affair or casual get-together. A black pearl necklace made from cultured or freshwater pearls is a symbol of power, money, protection and love, and they are thought to keep children safe as well. A black pearl was adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912 as the official birthstone for those who have a birthday in the month of June. And if you are a horoscope lover, it is known as the birthstone for the sun signs of Cancer and Gemini.

Pearls and pearl necklaces over the years have been idolized by many. Given on first wedding anniversaries, it is also traditional to give pearls on the 3rd, 12th, and 30th anniversaries. Pearls have had a tradition of myths, and the Egyptians prized them very much, burying them with their dead. Cleopatra actually dissolved a single pearl in a glass of wine and drank it to win a wager with Marc Anthony that she could consume the wealth of an entire nation in just one meal! As well as the Egyptians, the Greeks too, held the pearl in highest esteem for its beauty and its association with love and marriage. They believed that it would prevent the newly-wed woman from crying, and it would promote marital bliss.

Even in the dark ages, nobility cherished pearl necklaces, while brave knights actually wore pearls into battle believing the magic of pearls would protect them from harm. The Chinese believed many years ago that pearls actually fell from the sky when dragons fought. Chinese ancient legends believed they were the tears of gods. In the first century BC, Julius Caesar limited the wearing of pearls to only the rulers within the Roman Empire. Unfortunately, over the years, greed and lust for the black pearl necklace and various other sorts of pearl jewelry had depleted American pearl oyster resources by the 17th-century. Back in 1916, the famed French jeweler, Jacques Cartier, bought his landmark store on Fifth Avenue in New York by trading two pearl necklaces for the property. So there you have a fascinating piece of jewelry with a fascinating history!

Diamonds and Denim

By Elijah Anderson

It may come as a shock to those of us with more traditional tastes, but the elusive ideal of "class" can be achieved through unusual ensembles - such as those which combine diamonds and denim. In fact, you don't have to wear purely expensive stuff to look classy. You can be creative and quirky and at the same time show sophistication.

Diamonds and denim? Seriously? Yes, indeed! It may seem a little far-fetched for the more conventional of us, but this unique combination of high society and working class fashion brings out a grand mix of glamour and grit. As a diamond symbolizes the woman's finesse and nobler aspirations, denim represents the everyday woman's readiness to get "down and dirty," and to get her dainty yet strong hands soiled, should the need arise.

The dark colors of most articles of clothing made of denim are accentuated by the light caught in the facets of diamond jewelry. And even if denim items are washed into lighter colors, the stark bright flashes of diamond only serve to enhance the lightly feminine colors upon the rough fabric. In fact you can mix and match diamonds with basically any other fabric - diamonds and silk, diamonds and lace, diamonds and satin. Just as the diamond looks good with any metal base, when it is used on jewelry, the clarity inherent in the diamond ensures that it will look good with any sort of apparel.

But the diamonds and denim combination comes with a unique appeal. It brings out the dual nature of the woman: strength and delicacy, roughness and gentleness. This combination works for intense, down-to-earth women who won't compromise their style, and yet are open to displaying their more sensitive sides.

Another thing represented by denim is recumbence, the utterly casual, relaxed look. Denim, after all, is barred from most coat-and-tie establishments, and other gatherings that require tight dresses and un-flashy attire - in other words, events and places that require you to be uptight. On the other hand, diamonds are not frequently spotted in rough-and-tumble places and events, such as monster truck rallies, outdoor picnics and mosh pits. But why deny yourself the opportunity to create a pleasing blend of these two contrasting atmospheres? It is when a woman deviates from the norm that she is best able to express her individuality and creativity.

And if you don't believe me, you can always ask exquisitely fashionable creatures like Sela Ward, Alexis Bledel and Sports Illustrated model Melissa Keller. They both once attended the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 2004, hosted by Judith Ripka and Cotton Incorporated, wearing their favorite jeans and accessorized by elegant diamond jewelry. If you wish to bring out your more unconventional "classy" side, go for diamonds and denim!

Gucci was founded as a saddlery shop in 1906 by Guccio Gucci (1881), a craftsmans offspring. The house of Gucci was initially founded in Florence. Guccio Gucci had an excellent talent for leather craftsmanship. Gucci started by selling bags made of leather to horsemen in early 1920s and graduated to making and selling leather luggage as the clients moved on from horses to cars. 1938 saw the opening of Guccis first retail outlet on Via Condotti in Rome.

1947 saw the beginning of the Gucci tradition taking shape in form of bamboo handled leather bag that became the Gucci icon. 1950s saw the development of trademark red webbing, borrowed form the roots the saddle girth. This tued out to be the emblem of Gucci after some time.

Early 1950s saw many firsts for Gucci luggage, shoes, handbags with bamboo handles and ties. Guccio Gucci died in 1953 leaving the business in the hands of his capable family who made sure the business grew leaps and bounds. Gucci opened new stores in London, Paris, Tokyo, Beverly Hills and Palm Beach. Gucci brand shot to fame due to its endorsement by Hollywood stars like Peter Sellers, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepbu. The Jackie O with Jacqueline Kennedy and the Gucci handbag helped the brand Gucci rise to greater heights.

The recent past saw some turmoil in the Gucci family with the business changing hands. However, this was short lived and Gucci went back to its past glory with Tom Ford at the helm. The 199s saw Gucci diversifying into new products like fashion, colognes, shoes, fashions and fashion accessories.

The ranges of Gucci watches introduced during this period were very unique and carried a style and statement of their own. Owing to rich history and brand value, the Gucci watches were made to perfection and taste. As branded fashion accessories, the price was set at a premium to cater to clients matching the Gucci portfolio.

Many people who know Gucci found that these watches were not affordable. Although their insatiable hunger for Gucci watches remained, they had to wait until replica watches came into vogue. Gucci replica watches are available today for a fraction of the cost of a real Gucci watch.

A Gucci replica watch is available with all features of a real Gucci watch and in exact proportions. They are fully functional and appeal to the taste of many. Even people, who can afford a real Gucci watch, tend to wear replica watches because they feel that such expensive accessories should not be exposed to the hardships of nature. Gucci watches are treasured by their owners and Gucci replica watches more so, since they are used for daily use.

Gucci replica watches are sold by many online stores, but they come as a part of many other replica watches sold from the same store. However, before you buy a replica watch, it is advised that you get to know more about the online stores from Replica watches. This site carries honest reviews on most online replica stores.
